The Who will take the half-time show stage at Super Bowl 44 tonight (#sb44), and play a special mash-up of some classic hits. This special new track will be immediately available on on XBLA and Wii for download to play in Rock Band following the game.
MTV and Harmonix announced that they have already recorded the track that will be released as "The Who Super Bowl S-mash up" earlier this will. The tack will be for 160 Microsoft Points ($1.99) immediately following the game.
A timely tie-in like this is an perfect match for the digital distribution format allowing for content to be downloaded in conjunction with major events. It's something that we will see more of in the future.
The press release mentions that Sony Playstation 3 players will get the song soon (probably on the regular Thursday Schedule). I for one would have like to have seen a friendly wager on this one - if the Indianapolis Colts win, then XBLA gets the track post game, and if the New Orleans Saints win the Super Bowl then it hits the PSN instead. Now that would would get video game fanboys cheering their teams.
